SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Betty Joan LaFountain, affectionately known as 'Broadway Betty,' died Monday, June 20, 2005, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer at Mary's Haven, a program of Catholic Charities.Betty was a unique and constant presence in downtown Saratoga Springs for decades. She looked forward to visiting her many friends as she walked along Broadway on a daily basis. A diligent worker, she also prided herself on a job well done. She faced life head-on and reminded all who knew her of the importance of respect, friendship, laughter and unconditional love. Betty will be remembered as a woman who loved her life and everyone in it.With Betty's death, a light has gone out on Broadway, but she would want her friends to carry her light in their hearts. That is her gift to the Saratoga community.Betty was born July 25, 1933, in Crown Point. She is survived by Bob Downing, her beloved lifelong companion; her much loved cousin, Mary Hatley and her family; as well as a countless number of friends in Saratoga Springs and beyond, whom Betty considered family. She was a faithful attendee of the Fellowship Baptist Church for more than 20 years.Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes at 628 North Broadway (584-5373 or burkefuneralhome.com).Funeral services will be conducted in a celebration of her life at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenridge Cemetery, Lincoln Avenue.Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Mary's Haven, 35 New St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
