SOUTH PORTLAND -- Robert Lalumiere, 84, of D Street, South Portland passed away on Dec. 21, 2005 at Maine Medical Center in Portland. Mr. Lalumiere was born in Falmouth in 1921, son of Joseph and Eva Chalifoux Lalumiere. He was educated in Falmouth schools and was a graduate of Falmouth High School, the Boston Conservatory of Music and the Longee School of Music in Boston. After serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II, he returned to the family business, Elm Ice & OIl Company prior to beginning his musical training. Though classically trained, Mr. Lalumiere performed professionally as a pianist in various nightclubs and jazz venues in the Boston and Portland areas under the name of Bobby Laine. A sensitive interpreter of the Great American Songbook, he was also a talented songwriter of many songs of this genre. His 50-year career continued up to his recent illness two months ago. Surviving is his wife of 36 years, Margaret Cerino Lalumiere of South Portland; a son, Robert G. Lalumiere of Portland; two daughters, Suzanne E. Lalumiere of Woburn, Mass., and Margaret A. Lalumiere of Portland; two sisters, Jeannette Brown of Washington and Annette Howard of New Mexico; two grandchildren, Madison Lyn and Devinn James. Visiting hours will be from 7-9 p.m., on Tuesday at the Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., on Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be at a later date.
