TOWER - Helen Mary Carter, age 97 of Tower, passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2005, at her residence.She was born in Cheboygan on March 24, 1908, the daughter of William and Anna (Allaire) LaVigne. She married August Carter on Sept. 2, 1929 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Alverno. She was a lifelong resident of the Afton and Tower sections of Cheboygan County. Before she married and had a family, Helen worked as a seamstress at the Alpena Garment Factory.She was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Onaway since 1972, St. Monica's Catholic Church in Afton and the Afton Aids. Helen enjoyed playing piano, doing crossword puzzles, knitting and working in her flower beds. She especially enjoyed the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.She is survived by her children, Robert Carter of Tower, Keith Carter of Tower, Corieda Carter of California, Raymond (Joan) Carter of Bradenton, Fla., Larry (Joanne) Carter of Grayling, and Marlene (Harry) Hopkins of Tower; a sister, Eileen Scott of Jackson, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, August Carter, on July 19, 1973; brothers Kenneth, Ralph and Francis LaVigne; a sister, Lucille LaVigne; and a daughter-in-law, Joan Carter.Visitation took place from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2005 and from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, 2005, at the Chagnon Funeral Home in Onaway. A prayer service was conducted at 7 p.m. May 22 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Thomas Dominiak officiating.
