GURNEY, John Thomas (Jack) April 9, 1923 - November 27, 2004 Peacefully and freed from pain, our Jack passed into the embrace of God. Surrounded by his family and uplifted by prayer, Jack faced dying as he faced living, with integrity, courage, and steadfast faith. Jack leaves his wife Doreen (nee Shaw), his daughter Lisann (Peter Anderson), his grandchildren Christopher, Megan, Tawnya, and Terra, his sister-in-law Velma Morley, nieces Susan Deme and Karen Lewis and sister Joyce Bernhardt (Jack). Jack was predeceased by his daughter Diane Charlene. He was a graduate of McMaster University in Maths and Physics in 1946, he later rose to be an assistant vice-president of Bell Canada. Jack had a long career officiating football, basketball, baseball, and soccer and is a member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. For the past fourteen years, Jack served as a volunteer with the Heart Institute. He was a faithful member of St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church for over thirty years. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod St. on Monday, November 29th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, 154 Somerset St. at Elgin on Tuesday, November 30th at 11 a.m. Those who wish may honour Jack with a donation to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation or St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church.
