AUGUSTA -- Roland J. "Whitey" Poulin, 65, of Northern Avenue died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005, at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta following a long illness.He was born in Augusta on Aug. 17, 1940, the son of Lucien E. and Merilda (Pare) Poulin.He was educated in Augusta, was a lifelong choir member at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Augusta and performed for various charitable organizations. Whitey enlisted in the Marine Corps on May 31, 1960, serving in all three Marine divisions as a demolition expert. He was a member of the Marine Corps League, Detachment 599 in Kennebec Valley; a life member of the Disabled American Veterans; a life member of the Calumet Club; and a member of Maine State Retirees Association, the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, and Fraternal Order of Eagles. Whitey was a member of the U.S. Trotting Association, the Maine Harness Racing Commission, the Harness Horseman's Association and Maine Breeders Stakes, and he owned and raced horses for many years. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Joseph R. Poulin; and a sister, Marie Pauline Poulin. Surviving is a son, John R. Poulin of Woodland Hills, Calif.; a daughter, Jeanne Wellman of Augusta; four brothers, Richard Poulin of Winthrop, Raymond Poulin and Gerard Poulin of Augusta, and Alphonse Poulin of Manhattan, N.Y.; four sisters, Lucille Bolduc and Noella Poulin of Augusta, Muriel Poulin of Scarborough, and Jeanne Clements of Belgrade; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three uncles and three aunts; and several nieces and nephews.Visiting hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where members of the Calumet Club are asked to meet at 7 p.m. to offer a prayer service. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Northern Avenue, Augusta.
