Wilma Amelia Jalbert, 69, formerly of Reading, died of cancer June 25 in her residence in Gilbert, Ariz.Born in Mount Penn, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary (Gregory) Purdy.Jalbert was employed as a counselor by the Neighborhood Youth Corps, Reading, and as an assistant teacher by the Head Start program in the Reading School District.She was also employed as a nurse's aide at a geriatric care facility. She was last employed by Wal-Mart, Wyomissing, last working in 2003. Jalbert was one of the first women to serve as an executive staff member of the Berks County YMCA. She also served as a resident advisor at Threshold Inc., Reading.She was a 1954 graduate of Reading High School.Jalbert was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.She was a volunteer for many years for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Berks County where she helped raise funds and also chaired the “Favorite Pet Photo Contest” as well as many other committees.Jalbert served as judge of elections for her precinct in Reading for two terms. Surviving are two daughters, Vicki A. (Jalbert) Delp, Gilbert, with whom she resided, and Nikki L. (Jalbert) Phillips, Hamburg; and three sons: Joseph N.R. Jr., Reamstown, Lancaster County; Christopher A., Reading; and Ian S., Apache Junction, Ariz. Other survivors include 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.Memorial services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the First United Church of Christ, Reading. The Samaritan Funeral Home, Phoenix, was in charge of arrangements.
