PORTLAND -- Marian Louise Savard, 98, of Portland, died Friday, Dec. 2, 2005 at the Barron Center. She was born on Aug. 25, 1907 in Benedicta, a daughter of Lewis and Flora (McDonald) Qualey; she graduated from St. Benedict’s High School and Aroostook Normal School at Presque Isle. After teaching for a short time she decided to make a change. She and her cousin went to Boston and worked for Jordan Marsh until she was hired as a governess for the two children of artist Elliot O’Hara of Ogunquit, spending summers in Maine and winters in Washington, D.C. She recalled Mrs. O’Hara having Amelia Earhart, a relative, for tea shortly before her fatal flight. When the O’Hara children were ready for higher education she came back to Portland and entered nurses training at the Queen’s Hospital, now Mercy Hospital where she worked for many years. After receiving her R.N. in 1938, she did private duty nursing and went to North Conway to work with an injured skier. It was at this time that she met her husband, Lorenzo. They were married at St BenedictÕs Church in Benedicta and moved from North Conway to Portland in February 1942 where she lived until August of this year. She was a member of Mercy Hospital Nurses Alumni and was celebrated with her classmates for 65 year in 2003. Marian was a member of St. Patrick’s Church and the women’s council and was involved in a variety of activities at her children’s schools. Her husband died in August 1963 and her elder son died in May 1965. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Gertrude Conant and Sr. Luanus Qualey and one brother, Louis Qualey. She is survived by a son, Louis and his wife, Loretta; three daughters, Marie Solak and her husband Michael, Anne LeTourneau and her husband Edmund, Jeanne Silverman and her husband, Stephen; also survived by eight grandchildren, Michael and Lisa Savard, Christine Hamm, Michele LeTourneau, Elizabeth, William and Michael Solak, Aaron Silverman; and seven great- grandchildren; four sisters, Theresa Hansen of Bangor, Rita Qualey and Christine Heskett, both of Portland, and Bernadette Hunt of California; a brother, Albert Qualey and wife Rowena of Benedicta. Visiting hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., on Monday, Dec. 5 at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited at 10:15 a.m., Tuesday at the funeral home, followed by an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. PatrickÕs Church, 1342 Congress Street, Portland. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
