Raymond Serge Roy M.D. died peacefully on Monday, November 21, 2005 at Alterra Health Care in Tequesta. Florida. He was born on October 16, 1909 in Fall River, Massachusetts to Joseph and Eglantine (McLean) Roy. Dr. Roy received his Bachelor of Science degree from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts where he lettered in soccer and was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha fraternity. He attended the University of Alabama where he attained a Masters Degree in physiology and was awarded his Medical Degree from the University of Chicago. Dr. Roy served in the Coast Guard during World War II. On July 13, 1940 he married Grace B. Bruels, the love of his life. They were happily married for 58 years. Dr. Roy was a pioneer in the field of orthopedic surgery in the West Palm Beach area where he moved with his family in 1947. He was on the staff of St. Mary's and Good Samaritan Hospitals and willingly gave countless hours of free medical care to the patients at the local Pine Ridge Hospital as well as hospitals in Clewiston and Belle Glade. Dr. Roy treated hundreds of athletes at St. Ann's High School and Palm Beach High School and was the team physician for the St. Ann's football program for a number of years. The family traveled extensively in the 1950's throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe. The domestic travel was in a school bus converted to a motor home, a true innovation in the 1950's era. Dr. Roy was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed golfing and in his later years won numerous senior tournaments. After retiring Dr. Roy developed interests in computers and writing. He was frequently published in both medical and travel journals. He was preceded in death by his loyal and loving wife Grace. Survivors include two sons, Raymond (Karen) Roy, Jr. of Vero Beach, Florida, Dr. Douglas (Judy) Roy of Winter Haven, Florida; four daughters, Patricia (William) Hayward of Houston, Texas, Roberta Schwerzler of Morristown, New Jersey, Claire (Frank) Taylor of Los Angeles, California, and Constance (Terry) Fisher of Tequesta, Florida, and 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and a brother Normand Roy of Verona, New Jersey. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 1, 2005 from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, 1201 South Olive Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33401 with a Scripture Service to be held at 7:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 2, 2005 at 10:00 am in the Chapel at the Cathedral of Saint Ignatius Loyola, Palm Beach Gardens, FL with the interment to follow at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery.
