Helen SCHMIDT

Helen Deschene, 75, Stephen, MN, died on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005 at her home surrounded by her family. Helen Schmidt was born on March 27, 1930 in Stephen, MN, the daughter of Hans and Minnie (Kroll) Schmidt. She was raised in Stephen and graduated from Stephen High School. Helen got her teachers training in Warren and she taught country school near Argyle, MN for a couple of years. On Dec. 27, 1950, she was united in marriage to Omer Deschene. They made their home in Stephen. She was the hot lunch cook at the Stephen Public Schools for over twenty-six years. She was a member of the St. Stephen Catholic Church where she was active as an Eucharistic Minister and involved with the St. Stephen's Ladies Aid. Helen enjoyed golfing, fishing, quilting, wood working, doing crafts and following the Minnesota Twins. Left to mourn her passing are her husband, Omer and four children; Sandra Deschene of Grafton, ND, Barbara Deschene of Grand Forks, ND, Janice (Wayne) Bakken of East Grand Forks, MN and Randy (Kathy) Deschene of Moorhead, MN, ten grandchildren, soon to be one great-grandchild, two sisters; Norma (Orville) Koland of Karlstad, MN and Erma (Don) Mattila of Babbitt, MN, brother, William Schmidt of Ft. Mohave, AZ and two sisters-in-law; Ruth Schmidt of Coon Rapids, MN and Gwen Schmidt of Stephen, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Cora Schmidt and Joyce Schmidt and two brothers, Robert Schmidt and Harvey Schmidt. Mass of Christian Burial: 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, 2005 at the St. Stephen Catholic Church in Stephen, MN. Visitation: After 5:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Thursday at the St. Stephen Catholic Church in Stephen and one hour before services at the church on Friday.
