Doris V. Martin -MACON - Doris Valcourt Martin passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2005. Funeral services will be held at 4P.M. on Saturday, April 16 in the Chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home with interment following in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Park Memorial Methodist Church, 5290 Arkwright Road, Macon, 31210. -Mrs. Martin was born in Fall River, Massachusetts to the late Adelard and Anita Valcourt. She spent a lifetime in broadcasting, garnering numerous awards and accolades along the way. She began her career with WMAZ-TV in 1959 and the "talk show" format became her trademark, one that endured for over three decades. She retired in January of 1990. In addition to her dedication to journalism, Mrs. Martin was a tireless volunteer and civic leader. She was involved for many years with the March of Dimes and the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, as well as serving on numerous boards involving special needs children. To honor her achievements and efforts, she received the Broadcaster Citizen of the Year for 1987 from the Georgia Association of Broadcasters, the March of Dimes Mother of the Year for 1978, the Business and Professional Women's Club "Woman of Achievement" for 1986, the Sertoma Club's Service to Mankind Award, a regional Emmy Award nomination for her documentary on child abuse and neglect, and countless other recognitions. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Yvette Matton, and brother, Roger Valcourt. -Mrs. Martin is survived by her husband of 48 years, Reuben Martin; son, Jay Martin, Milledgeville; two sisters, Lorraine Carvalho, Rhode Island and Jeannette Laliberte, Florida; and several nieces and nephews. -Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery has charge of arrangements.
