PORTEUS, Harold - Passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 8, 2009, in his 82nd year. A loving husband of the late Freda Bamber (1976) and caring father of Peter Duncan, Andrew, David, Ian, and Philip. Cherished grandfather of five, and great grandfather of four. He will be sorely missed by all. Harold was born, raised and started a family in Lancashire, England. A quietly courageous man, in 1964 he chose to leave other close family and friends in the U.K. to provide a better life for his wife and sons in Canada. He chose St. Catharines as the family's new home, and worked for many years at Thompson Products (TRW). While always busy with family and career, Harold still found time to indulge his love of classical music and displayed his artistic side with many fine paintings for family and friends. In retirement, he renewed his boyhood love of hiking and would often be seen walking the paths of the Welland Canal and Niagara Parkway. Regrettably, Harold was afflicted with Alzheimer's for the last few years of his life, but remained pleasant, cheerful, and friendly to the end. The family would like to thank the staff of Gilmore Lodge, Fort Erie, for their care and support for Harold. The family will receive friends at the BUTLER FUNERAL HOME, 33 Duke St., Downtown Chapel, St. Catharines, on Wednesday, February 11th from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Alzheimer's Society of Niagara Region.
