VERONI, John J. "Jake", 81, of Lorain died on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at New Life Hospice Center at St. Joseph in Lorain, OH following a brief illness. Mr. Veroni was born on June 15, 1922 in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. He moved to Lorain in 1957. He was a Veteran of the Canadian Army during WWII. He received 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, France & German Star, CVSM & CL Awards. Mr. Veroni had been employed at Port Weller Dry Docks, St. Catharines, Ontario Canada. He retired from American Ship Bui lding in Lorain, Ohio in 1986. He was a member of the St. Anthony of Padua Church. He was a past commander of the Canadian Legion Post #54 in Lorain, a member of the Canadian Legion in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, a member of the American Legion, the Lorain County Veteran's Council and the Lorain Senior Citizens. He helped organize and was a driving force of the American Ship Building Retirees. He enjoyed building lighthouses, woodworking and gardening. He was an enthusiastic sports fan, esp ecially hockey. Mr. Veroni at one time was well known for training boxers, having trained several Golden Gloves winners, while living in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Florence (nee Plante) Veroni; daughters L inda Mathewson of Lorain, Catherine Sekletar of Amherst, Terese Veroni of Mansfield, Johnna Lyman of Avon Lake, sons Joseph Veroni of Lorain, Michael Veroni of Loveland, Thomas Veroni of Fayetteville, NC, and Anthony Veroni of Denver, CO; 13 grandchi ldren, one great-grandchild; sisters Dolly Brabant of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Rose Jackson of Welland, Ontario, Canada and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Veroni is predeceased in death by his parents Giovanni and Philomena (nee Ciferelli) Veroni; s isters Donnie Barry, Katie Colosimo, Theresa Sovran, brothers Don Veroni, Tom Veroni, and Tony Veroni. Friends may call at SCHWARTZ SPENCE BOYER & COOL HOME FOR FUNERALS, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain, OH, on Friday, May 21, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Wake Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by Military prayers provided by VFW Post 451 and American Legion Post #30. Funeral Services will be held on May 22, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Bu rial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Lorain, OH, with Rev.
