Mrs. Nellie Mondragon Nolido Sarkar March 12, 1932 - March 20, 2009 - It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Nellie Sarkar, 77 years old of Halifax. She died peacefully in her sleep at her home on March 20, 2009. She is survived by her son, Samuel (Celia); brother, Eduardo, and sister, Helen (Danny); grandchildren, Gareth, Zoe and Oscar; nieces, Cynthia and Eleanor and other nieces, nephews, and relatives in the U.S., Canada, and the Philippines. She was predeceased by her husband, Sushil; father, Simeon Nolido Expectacion Mondragon; sister, Erlinda, and brother, Romeo (Philippines). Nellie had worked extensively and selflessly as a Doctor in the Philippines, the United States and Halifax. Before moving to Halifax, Nellie completed her specialized training in the U.S. She was a staff member of the Victoria General Hospital specializing in Anatomical Pathology from 1964-1998. She was also a staff lecturer with the Department of Pathology at Dalhousie University, Faculty of Medicine. Nellie was tireless on her efforts in promoting her Filipino heritage and culture. She inspired her community through her many charitable deeds and volunteer works. She was a founding member of the Filipino Association of Nova Scotia (FANS), the Filipino Canadian Heritage Society of Nova Scotia (FCHSNS). She also served as past president of (FANS). She enjoyed and loved sharing her passion for music bringing cheers to seniors through her love of singing and music. She was a classy person who touched the lives of everyone she met. Visitation will be held in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd. from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on March 22 and 23. Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 24 in St. Mary's Basilica, Spring Garden Road, Halifax at 10 a.m. Private cremation to follow. Interment will be held at a later date. Reception in celebration of her life will be held in Atlantic Funeral Home Reception Centre following the service. Donations in memory maybe be made to Salvation Army.
