Blanka RICHTER

GYULAI, Blanka (nee Richter), C.M., Q.C. 1909-2004. On December 9, 2004, in Montreal, at the age of ninety-five. Born in Nitra, Hungary, Dr. of Laws, Charles University, Prague, Dr. Gyulai immigrated to Canada in 1948. A leader of the Hungarian community in Montreal, she was the principal founding organizer of Le Foyer Hongrois retirement residence established in Montreal in 1981 and its President from 1981 to 1994. She was Chairman of the Hungarian Saint Stephen's Ball in 1979. For many years, Dr. Gyulai acted as legal counsel of The Hungarian Canadian Engineers Association and several other Hungarian Canadian associations. Active in the provincial and federal Liberal parties, Dr. Gyulai was admitted to the Quebec Bar in 1958, practiced law in Montreal, and was made a Q.C. in 1974. She also served on the Federal Multi-Cultural Commission. Dr. Gyulai was recognized for her many contributions to Canadian society by being named to the Order of Canada in 1982 and was decorated with the Order of Hungary. Predeceased by her husbands, Mihaly Gyulai and Leo Gould, as well as her sister, Biri Richter (Nicholas) Jonas, and brother, Charles (Teri) Richter, she is mourned by her sister, Charlotte Richter, and her nephews John (Holly) and Leslie (Jennifer) Jonas, her nieces Anita (Donald) Wood and Erica (Richard) Lowery and their families. A Memorial Service will be held at the Hungarian United Church, 50 Graham Blvd., Montreal on Monday, December 13, 2004 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Le Foyer Hongrois in Dr. Gyulai's name.
