Clifford Vernon FAULKNOR

FAULKNOR , Clifford Vernon Clifford Vernon Faulknor of Calgary and Cochrane passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Thursday, September 24, 2009 at Carewest Royal Park, Calgary at the age of 96 years. Cliff was born on March 3, 1913 in Vancouver, B.C. and after completing high school worked at various jobs across Canada while "riding the rails" in the 1930's. He served as a marine diesel engineer on an army transport vessel during World War II. In 1949, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree from the University of British Columbia and began working as a land inspector with the British Columbia Department of Lands and Forests, Division of Land Utilization Research and Survey. In 1954, he accepted a position as western field editor of Country Guide magazine and was a contributing editor to Cattlemen magazine. He retired in 1975. Later he served for ten years on the Alberta Land Compensation Board. Early in his life, Cliff showed a talent for writing by winning a short story contest in high school. He is the author of two adult books, six novels for juveniles including the White Calf, winner of the Little Brown Award, and many short stories. He received the Alberta Culture Award for best nonfiction book by an Alberta author . Published in 1976 for Pen and Plow and the Vicky Metcalf Award in 1979 for the same book. At age eighty-five, Cliff turned his hand to painting and turned out a number of fine pictures. Beloved dad and granddad, he leaves to mourn, his son Stephen (Cathy) Faulknor and daughter Noreen Pitman, grandchildren Melanie Faulknor and Kevin and Greg Pitman as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Betty in 1990, his grandson Michael Faulknor in 2005 and his brother Jerry Vernon-Martin in 1998. Cliff touched the lives and hearts of many people. We will miss his wonderful mind, quick wit and great stories. Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Service at St. Andrew's Anglican Church, 1611 St. Andrew's Place N.W. Calgary on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to The Salvation Army, 9618 - 101A Avenue, Edmonton, AB T5H 0C7.
