David BERWICK

BERWICK , David (VE6DD) It is with profound sadness that the day has come to announce to all who knew him, that Dave passed away on September 26, 2009 in the Southwood Care Hospice in Calgary at the age of 86. Dave was born on March 23, 1923 in Swift Current, Saskatchewan and moved to Clyde, Alberta in 1933. He served in the Air Force from 1941 to 1945 followed by a few years working for Canadian Pacific Airlines in Hay River, NWT. He joined the Department of Transportation in 1951 and worked in Snag and Teslin, Yukon, before being transferred to Edmonton in 1958. During his DOT career his responsibilities grew from radio operator status to Regional Supervisor, Engineering Services. After retiring in 1978 he spent numerous winter months in Arizona during the 80's and early 90's. He was an active member of the Amateur Radio Club and spent many hours in his "ham shack" talking to other "hams" around the world or at his workbench fixing a radio or two. He will be missed by his sons Ross of Edmonton and Gary (Bernadette) of Calgary. He will especially be missed by his three grandchildren, Jeff who resides in Acapulco, Brent who is currently working in Thailand and Deborah of Toronto, all whom he kept in weekly contact with through his regular Sunday calls or e-mails. He was their "Poppa" and he will always be in their memories. He will also be sorely missed by Maxine Topping who has been his dearest partner for the last four years. He is survived by his brother Jim (Geneva) of Westlock and sister Peggy Jeffcoat (Allen) of Sherwood Park and was predeceased by his brother Ian in 1952. He was also predeceased by his loving wife Pennie of fifty-five years in 1998 who he now will be joining at the Northern Lights Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Service to be held on October 1, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Memories Funeral Home, 13403 St. Albert Trail, Edmonton. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Southwood Hospice for the care Dave received during the last two months. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
