VANCE, Edward Doty - Died September 28, 2009, at the St. Joseph's Lifecare Centre, after suffering a massive stroke six years ago. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Frances (nee Waterous), four children, Don (Jay), David (Karen), Doug (Carolyn), and Dianne Sipprell (Paul), and grandchildren Eddy, Rob (Chloe), Jessie (Matt), Matt (Britt), Sally, Rick, Jenny, Dave, Mike, Krista, and Molly. Also surviving are his brother, Robert Vance of Matteson, Illinois, and sister Catherine (Bill) Fiala of Tacoma, Washington. Ed was born November 28, 1924 in Springfield, Ohio to Edward and Edythe Vance. He moved with the family to Brantford in 1939, where he graduated from Brantford Collegiate at age 18. He was active in scouting, and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the United States and King Scout in Canada. Following his graduation, and with the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was posted successively to England and then to Japan, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. Upon his return to Brantford after the war, he went to work for Mott Manufacturing Company. He was married to Frances on June 2, 1951, and they eventually established their residence on Riverview Drive in Brantford. Ed was an avid golfer and curler and won the club curling championship at the Brantford Golf and Country Club in 1968. The family expresses sincere gratitude to all the staff of St. Joseph's Lifecare Centre for providing friendship and wonderful care to Ed for the last five years. A private service will be held Wednesday, September 30. Arrangements are entrusted to McCLEISTER FUNERAL HOME. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, St. Joseph's Lifecare Centre, or the Brantford General Hospital.
