DAVID, Madeline “Kenkiohkoktha“ - age 77, of 458 Island Road, Akwesasne, Ontario, passed away on Monday afternoon, September 28, 2009 at the Ottawa General Hospital, where she had been a patient since Saturday. She was born July 26, 1932 on Cornwall Island, the daughter of Louis and Eva Jacobs Point. She attended schools on Cornwall Island. Madeline married Ross David on September 10, 1950, the first couple to be married in the Longhouse in Akwesasne. Mr. David predeceased her on August 27, 1995. When she was younger, she worked in the spinach fields in Malone. She laced lacrosse sticks at the Lacrosse Factory on Cornwall Island and also at the Freedom School. Madeline operated a private home day care and once worked at a bakery in Racquette Point. She was a basket and quilt maker and was known for her baked goods. Kenkiohkoktha was a faith keeper at the Mohawk Nation Longhouse and a member of the Tri-District Elders and the St. Regis Mohawk Senior Citizens. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, Chinese checkers, and reading magazines. She was a collector, especially stuffed animals and dolls, and enjoyed going to garage sales. Madeline is survived by her 9 children and their spouses, Danny and Jennifer David, Akwesasne; Winnifred and Steve McComber, Kahnawake; Ernest David and Sandra Fox, Lorena David and Harry Nanticoke, Leroy and Teresa David, Sherman and Jennifer David, Dinah David, Eugene David and Theresa Square, and Brenda David and Robert Ayotte, all of Akwesasne; 2 chosen sons, Ricky McDonald and Tiorahkwate; many grandchildren, and several great and great great grandchildren; and 2 special friends, Clark Lazore and Bernie Thompson, both of Akwesasne. She is also survived by 5 sisters, Cecilia Point, Judy and Jake Swamp, Charlotte Thompson, Clara and Donald White, all of Akwesasne; and Pauline and John Oliver, Rochester; a sister-in-law, Karen Point, Akwesasne; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Floyd “Wally“ David on October 21, 1991; 3 sisters, Audrey Thompson in 2008, Florence David in 2009, and Dinah Point in 1958; 3 brothers in infancy and a brother, Percy Point in 1998. Friends may call beginning 7:00PM Wednesday at the Thompson Memorial Wellness Center, Akwesasne, Ontario until 10:00 AM Friday. Funeral Services will be held Friday 11:00 AM at the Mohawk Nation Longhouse, burial will follow in the Longhouse Cemetery. Arrangements are with the DONALDSON FUNERAL HOME, Massena.
