WILLIAMSON, Kenneth Bryce November 1, 1922 - October 12, 2009 Family members announce, with profound sorrow, the death of Kenneth Bryce Williamson after a short illness. Born in Winnipeg, he excelled at school and was variously awarded the Governor General's Medal on high school graduation, a Gold Medal in Arts and a B.A. (Hons) from the University of Manitoba. After a period of graduate study at the University of Toronto, he was appointed a Foreign Service Officer with the Department of External Affairs in 1947. In that same year he married Patricia Lois Bernard, a piano student at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Together they enjoyed a life of tremendous adventure, beginning with diplomatic postings in Rome, Prague, Santiago and Berlin. He served as Ambassador in three subsequent postings in Ankara, Washington (O.A.S.) and Havana. Upon retirement, he became a student at the University of Ottawa in the Department of Religious Studies, earning an M.A. for his writing on liberation theology, and a PhD for a thesis on concepts of the Church in contemporary theology. He loved rejoining the academic world as it afforded him time for reading, reflection and writing. It also provided opportunities to travel to every corner of the earth to visit family and indulge his curiosity. He is survived by his wife, a retired organist and musical director. His children are: Janet Celia (mother of Layla, Susan and Talal) residing in the Sultanate of Oman; Susan Diana in London, England; Kenneth Gavin Bernard in Ottawa; and James Keir who lives in Toronto with wife Margaret and their son George. A funeral service will be on Saturday, October 17 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Matthias Anglican Church, 555 Parkdale Avenue, Ottawa. Reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind would be appreciated. Published in the Ottawa Citizen from 10/14/2009 - 10/17/2009
