LAPPALAINEN, Aino Tellervo 2009-10-14 Aino Tellervo Lappalainen, age 103 years, passed away peacefully on the morning of Sunday, October 11, 2009 at Dawson Court where she was lovingly cared for by the wonderful people of 2 North for almost five years. She was born near Helsinki, Finland, on December 5, 1905 and had fond memories of her childhood there, much of which was spent outdoors. Her love of nature continued throughout her life and she spent many summers camping or at summer camps. At the age of 16 she came to Canada with her parents and settled in Windsor, Ontario. There she married Eero Lappalainen and raised a family (son John and daughter Liisa). She gardened, learned to weave, and became a practical nurse. In the early 1960‘s she moved to Thunder Bay, which she loved for its natural beauty. She passed on her love of music, books and nature to her daughter who greatly treasures these gifts. She was a sensitive soul, had an independent spirit, and was self reliant and full of ’sisu‘. Never interested in material wealth, she lived frugally yet gave generously to others. She is survived by her daughter Liisa, her grandchildren Martha, Carol, John, Andy and Rick, and many great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her son John. Cremation has taken place. EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley St. at Algoma in care of arrangements. If friends so desire, donations may be made to Dawson Court or to the Thunder Bay Public Library.
