DENTON, Col. Edgar, III, (U.S.M.A. Ret.) - Col. Edgar Denton, III, (Ret.), 89, of Fair Haven, NY, died suddenly October 6, 2009 at Oswego Hospital, Oswego, New York. He was born and raised in Elmira, NY. Col. Denton received his B.A., M.A. and PhD from Syracuse University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1969 in both WWII and the Korean War. While in the military, he taught history in the Social Sciences Department at U.S.M.A., West Point from 1954 to 1969. At West Point, Col. Denton coached the sailing team which became the first Army team to defeat Navy in sailing competition. For many years he served as the Officer Representative of the West Point Hockey Team. After retirement from the U.S. Army, Col. Denton moved to Kingston, Ontario where he taught American History at Royal Military College for 15 years. He retired as Full Professor of the History Department. While in Kingston, he continued to indulge his sailing enthusiasm with his participation in C.O.R.K. After retiring for a second time, Col. Denton moved to Fair Haven, NY, where he was elected President of the School Board of the Red Creek School District. He was Design Coordinator of the schooner OMF Ontario for the Oswego Maritime Foundation; as well as an active member of the Sterling Historical Society and the Sterling Silver Swingers. Colonel Denton was predeceased by his parents, Edgar Denton, Jr. and Dorothy Gwynn Denton; his wife, Janet Gere Denton and his brother, Richard Denton. He is survived by his children, Peter Denton of Boise, ID (Bonnie), Christopher Denton of Elmira, NY, Jennifer Denton of Syracuse, NY and Molly Denton of Inverary, Ontario (Robert); two sisters, Mary Lou Engle (George) of Scotia, NY and Gwynne Burkhardt (James) of Hopkinton, NH; sister-in-law, Natalie Denton of Elmira, NY; eight grandchildren; several great- grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A Memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 10, 2009 at Foster Funeral Home, Hannibal, NY. A reception followed at Fair Haven Community Church, Fair Haven, NY. Contributions in memory of Col.
