WADDELL , Freda Pauline (nee Crum) January 26, 1917 - October 16, 2009 Freda Pauline Waddell, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at the Sarcee Hospice in Calgary on October 16, 2009, at the age of 92, after a brief struggle with cancer. She is survived by two devoted children, Brent (Carol Rogers) Waddell of Calgary and Wendy (Erik) Sorensen of Heriot Bay, B.C., as well as three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Kirsten (Pat Galley) Sorensen of Campbell River, B.C. and their son, Jordan; Lisa (Rob) Sorensen-Holmes of Heriot Bay, B.C. and their son, Carter; and David (Keara Smyth-Robson) Waddell of Vancouver, B.C. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Marg Waddell of Esquimalt, B.C., and a nephew, Rick (Angela) Waddell of Duncan, B.C., as well as by numerous cousins and their families, most of whom reside in Calgary. She was predeceased in 1998 by her loving husband and dearest friend of fifty-three years, Boyd Waddell. Freda was born in Calgary, the only child of Gladys and Chris Crum, and grew up in Calgary and Edmonton. While attending Western Canada High School in Calgary, she worked as an assistant for Birmingham Portrait Studio, which marked the beginning of a lifelong interest in photography. She also became an accomplished pianist and accordionist. During WWII, she served in the Canadian Women's Army Corps at the Experimental Station at Suffield, Alberta, where she met her husband, Boyd; they were married at Suffield on June 6, 1945. After the war, they opened a portrait studio in Brooks, Alberta. In 1950 they moved back to Calgary, where they lived for the rest of their days. Freda dedicated her life to creating a happy and comfortable home for her family, and she gave much of her time to caring for her parents and husband while they were ill. During the 1960's, she commenced her studies in art, taking her initial instruction at the Alberta College of Art and Design. For many years she played a prominent part in Calgary's artistic community. She was a founding member of Centennial Art Gallery, in which she was active until very recently as a contributor, part-time worker and associate member. She was a prolific and imaginative artist up to the time of her death. Her paintings and sketches have graced many homes and public places. She was especially well-known for her sketches of Calgary's historic sites and buildings and, above all, for the number, variety and beauty of her water colour paintings of flowers and scenes from nature. Freda was actively involved in many organizations and community endeavours over the years, most notably the Calgary Co-operative Association, the Pastoral Care Institute of the United Church of Canada, the McDougall Church of Morley, Alberta, and the Federal Superannuates National Association. Her memory will be cherished, not only by her family, but also by her many friends, whose loyalty and support during her final illness is deeply appreciated. Freda's family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Rockyview General Hospital and, most especially, of the Sarcee Hospice for all that they did to alleviate her suffering and make her as comfortable as possible during the last few months of her life. Special thanks is also due to the physicians who monitored her health during the period preceding her death, particularly to the care, sympathy and understanding exercised by her personal physician, Dr. Lauf. At Freda's request, no Funeral Service will be held. An informal gathering of family and friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Cremation arrangements are in care of FOSTER'S GARDEN CHAPEL. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca .
