MATHESON, Mary Evelyn Mary Evelyn Matheson of Edmonton passed away on October 20, 2009 at the age of 93. Born in Wetaskiwin, Alberta on November 10, 1915 to the late Thorwald and Ida Jevne, Mary was raised on the family farm in the Wang district and graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Misericordia Hospital in Edmonton in 1937. She specialized as a private duty nurse. She married Sam Matheson in 1942. They moved to Grande Prairie in 1955 where they lived for 33 years before returning to Edmonton. Keenly interested in education, she championed the cause for inclusion of kindergarten in the Grande Prairie Public School system in the early 1960's. She also served on the Board of Governors for the Grande Prairie Regional College. Mary is survived by two sons, David and William (Beverley); three daughters, Janet (Jim Heider), Jo Anne and Sue Anne, ten grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Isabel Fee and Margaret Mullin. She is predeceased by her husband, Sam, sister, Lillian Murphy and infant brother, David. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 24 at the Chapel of Howard & McBride Westlawn, 16310 Stony Plain Road, Edmonton with cremation to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated. The family wishes to thank the staff at Riverbend Retirement Residence and Dr. Krish Dhunnoo for their kindness to Mary over the past 10 years.
