Stuart B. WOODS

WOODS, Stuart B. Professor Emeritus Department of Physics University of Alberta With great sadness, the family announces the passing of Stuart Woods on Sunday, October 25, 2009, after a long and valiant journey with Lewy Body Disease. Stuart is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Willa (nee McPeak), his son W. James (Maureen) of Calgary, Alberta, his daughter Marianne (Alan Whitten) of Kanata, Ontario and three grandchildren Lauren, Craig and Sheena Whitten. He is also survived by one brother R. Craig Woods of Kinistino, Saskatchewan. Stuart was born on April 26, 1924 in Pathlow, Saskatchewan, grew up on the farm and went on to complete post secondary studies at the University of Saskatchewan and the University of British Columbia. He worked with the National Research Council in Ottawa and then completed his career with 28 years of service at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton. He was a professor in the Department of Physics and served in several administrative capacities including Assistant Chairman of the Physics Department and the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research in the Faculty of Science. He made an important and significant contribution to the work and life of the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science and to the University. He served on numerous University, Faculty and Department committees and additionally National and International Scientific committees. He authored or co-authored nearly 100 physics publications. He was a kind and humble gentleman with an engaging sense of humour. He enjoyed the company of a good party and a sip of well aged single malt scotch. In his later years he accepted his challenges in life with a calm, pragmatic manner creating as much humour and enjoyment as he could. We loved him and will miss him very much. Thanks to all the staff at The Empress retirement residence in Kanata, Ontario for the years of loving care and companionship, and the staff at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario for their exceptional care. Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue at Richmond Road, Saturday November 7, 2009 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated by the family.
