PULLEYBLANK , Robert (Bob) Robert (Bob) Pulleyblank, 85, of Nanaimo B.C. died peacefully in the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital on October 23, 2009. Born on March 6, 1924 to George and Ruth Pulleyblank, he grew up in Calgary then earned a BA from the University of Alberta (Edmonton). After serving in the Canadian Army in WWII, he returned to Edmonton to complete a BEd. He married Dorothy Frickelton in 1946 and they led an active and happy life until her death in 1999. They are survived by four children and their spouses: William and Diane Pulleyblank (New York), Robyn and John McKay (Nanaimo), Douglas Pulleyblank and Anne-Marie Comte (Vancouver), Andrew and Della Pulleyblank (Vancouver). He is also survived by his brother Edwin Pulleyblank and sister Grace Craig; grandchildren Morgan and Oliver Pulleyblank, Jonas, Nathan and Bryna McKay, Catherine, Ingrid and Victor Pulleyblank, Ashley and Adam Pulleyblank, and great-grandchildren Leela and Tegan. Bob spent his teaching career in Alberta, starting in small towns then moving to Western Canada High in Calgary in 1959. He became Assistant Principal at Western and in 1965 completed his MEd degree at The University of Alberta, Calgary. His subsequent appointment as founding principal of Central Memorial High had particular significance to him because his father had been Assistant Principal at "old" Central High. As well as teaching a variety of subjects, his background in music allowed him to conduct choral groups and orchestras. In 1982, he retired from the Calgary Board of Education and he and Dorothy moved to Nanaimo. He continued with his love of theatre that in Calgary had seen him serve as president of Workshop Theatre. He acted and was musical director in a number of performances in Nanaimo and Qualicum Beach. In both Calgary and Nanaimo, he was active in Rotary International, including two terms as president of the Nanaimo Downtown Rotary Club. In the last decade, he found a new passion, becoming active in the Taoist Tai Chi Society with a special interest in health recovery. Through his life, Bob was involved in many charitable activities, and the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a charity with significance to you. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 30 at 3:00 p.m. at FIRST MEMORIAL FUNERAL SERVICES (1720 Bowen Road, Nanaimo) followed by a reception at the Taoist Tai Chi Society (1724 Bowen Road).
