BERREY, Joan Elizabeth (nee Campbell) January 29th, 1938 Joan passed away unexpectedly on November 4th, 2008 with family and close friends at her bedside. Predeceased by her husband Esmond, Joan is survived by sister Helen (John) Humphries, brother Billy (Frances) Campbell, nephews and nieces Ian (Seanna), Julie (Aaron), Gillian (Rob), David (Rose) and Catherine (Trevor) and their children Shae, Cead, Cameron, Thomas, Liam and Sophie. Joan will be deeply missed by her partner Harvey Elbe, his son Dean and Harvey's family, and also by her step-sons Peter (Lind) and David Berrey. Born and educated in Belfast, N. Ireland, Joan began a career with the British Foreign Office. She had postings in the former Yugoslavia, Malta and Washington, D.C. While working for the British Foreign Secretary she travelled extensively and met Esmond during this time. They were married in August 1973 and settled in Scotland where she continued her career at Edinburgh University until they emigrated to Canada in 1984. Joan worked at Malaspina University-College, Nanaimo and later at the Cowichan Campus before retiring in 1998. Joan was a talented artist specializing in pastel and with a particular interest in portraying animals. Always an avid reader she enjoyed being a member of a book club. Golfing, photography, and travelling with Harvey were fulfilling activities for her. Time spent with her family was particularly precious to Joan. As family Matriarch, true friend and confidant Joan's passing has left a profound void in many lives. Family, friends and colleagues, here and overseas, are deeply saddened at her passing. Joan's family appreciates the care and consideration given by Dr. Wilson, nurses and staff at the Cowichan and District Hospital. A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00pm 5:30pm, Sunday, November 16th, Cowichan Golf & Country Club, 4955 Trans Canada Highway, Duncan, B.C. In lieu of flowers Joan would have appreciated donations being made to a cause of your own choosing 511642 Published in the Victoria Times-Colonist from 11/8/2008 - 11/9/2008
