Olga Hryniuk (nee Sorokowski) November 11, 1917 October 31, 2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Olga Hryniuk (nee Sorokowski) at St. Paul's Hospital on October 31, 2009. Olga passed away peacefully at the age of 91. Olga is survived by her five children, nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren: Albina Savoy (Dick Hardwick); Michael (Sandra) Hryniuk and children Miles and his children Nikita and Karissa, Mark (Connie) and their children Jayde and Jessimyn, Murray (Kim) and their child Noah, Angela (Jason) and their children Aleksa, Sofia, Joel; Stella (William) Shewchuk and child Laura; Bernie (Morris) Shynkaruk and children Brent (Bobbi) and their children Billy, Jack, Kaylee, Kerry (Liam) and their child Easton, Leanne; Christine Grimard (Real Syrenne) and child Justin; by her sisters, Jean (John) Zakresky, Nettie (Edward) Yuzdepski, Stella (Tom) Atkin, Susan (Walter) Michasiw and brother, Walter (Jean) Sorokowski. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Fred Hryniuk; her parents, Anton and Yustyna Sorokowski; her two infant sons, Alex and Morris; her grandchildren, John Savoy and Sherry Shewchuk; her brothers, Mike (Albena), Peter (Victoria), John (Josephine), Dave (Mary), Nicholas (Kay), Steve; her sisters, Mary (Martin) Dinter, Theresa, Annie (Steve) Groshko. Olga married Fred on October 5, 1937 and began an amazing life journey. They farmed near the community of Prud'homme and in 1941 they moved into town. They operated the local cafe and then converted it into a dry goods store. Fred subsidized the cafe by grain farming and hauling cattle while Olga ran the dry goods store. They soon began their family having 7 children: Albina, Alex, Michael, Stella, Morris, Bernie and Christine. Alex and Morris died as infants. Olga and Fred were always looking for ways to improve their life. In 1948 they purchased the Prud'homme Hotel and with 5 young children were extremely busy. Together they worked hard at the business, Fred managed the bar, hotel and farmed, while Olga prepared all the meals for the guests, enjoyed by travellers, CN crews and family and friends. They truly had an entrepreneurial spirit and shared a common goal to provide a better future for their family. June 1957, the hotel burned down and they lost everything. Although the situation was devastating, their determination and persistence helped them overcome the tragedy. Their dream of a better life kept them going. They decided to rebuild the hotel and by October 1957 they were back in business. Olga and Fred continued to work hard at the hotel but they were also an integral part of the community. In 1960 they purchased a hall and had it moved into town and gave the community a new Community Hall for townspeople to use for celebrations and a meeting place. The town still actively uses the hall for community events. Olga was one of the original founders of the Prud'homme Ukrainian Catholic Church and in 1995 she was recognized and honoured as an original founder and planted a tree in front of the church, which will continue to grow in her memory. Olga and Fred were also instrumental in bringing in water and sewer to serve the town. The Saskatchewan Hotel Association honoured Olga with a lifetime membership for 47 years of dedication and service. Their hard work, commitment to the community and endless contributions will always be remembered and celebrated. In 1995, Olga and Fred moved to St Volodymyr community in Saskatoon. Olga loved her new home and all her new friends. She continued to live her life to the fullest and enjoyed socializing, playing Bingo and cards. She passed on her passion and joy of cooking and spent many hours with her family making perogies, pickles, and the best cabbage rolls ever! Olga took such pleasure and pride in her family and participated in every family event. She took such pleasure in having family around, and would share stories and history with such pride. A sincere gratitude to Tony and Agnes for their love and support. Olga was a remarkable woman and for those that knew her will agree that we are all blessed to have known her. She was a pillar of strength, hardworking and dedicated to her family, friends and community. She was gentle, loving, full of wisdom, funny and an absolute joy to be around. Her spiritual belief was inspirational and she was a true example of being one of God's children. We celebrate Olga's life, her heritage, her love and her spirit and inspiration will be with us always. We thank all staff and caregivers at St. Volodymyr Villa, and the nursing staff at St. Paul's Hospital 5th Floor Surgery and the doctors.
