IN LOVING MEMORY LYNNE (MAGDALENA) BAKER November 17, 1923 - November 1, 2009 On November 1, 2009, Lynne (Magdalena) Baker of Edmonton passed away peacefully at 85 years of age, after a few months of ongoing recovery from a broken hip. She will be fondly remembered by her friends and family for her strong Christian faith, her dedication to teaching, and her heart for charity locally and worldwide. Lynne was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Alice Baker, her siblings George Baker, Minnie Baker (1911), Catherine Anderson, and Minnie Plantinga. Left to cherish her memory are her brother, Charles (Betty) Baker, numerous nieces and nephews, friends from Beulah Manor, the Beulah Alliance Church and numerous students from the Philippines whose studies she supported. She will be especially missed by her friend, colleague and travel companion, Margaret (Bouwman) Younghans. Raised on a homestead in Neerlandia, Alberta, Lynne, as she preferred to be called, was determined to be a teacher but during the war years there was enough work on the farm. Her teaching career began in 1954 in a two room schoolhouse in Neerlandia. After that she went on to teach in Whitinsville, Massachusetts, Kalamazoo, Michigan, Edmonton Christian School, Namao school, in the Philippines and closed out her career teaching at Newton School in Edmonton, retiring in 1984. Teaching opportunities had opened up the world for Lynne and she and her dear friends and colleagues Jenny and Margaret traveled widely. Her time teaching in the Philippines was especially dear to her. She felt privileged that she had so many opportunities to travel and to have witnessed how other cultures worked and lived and believed deeply that her greater service was where ever the Lord would lead her. She daily cherished God's grace and promises and devoutly served her Lord, living her life in service to others. Lynne appreciated the excellent care from hospital staff at the Misericordia Hospital and the Lynnwood Care Centre in Edmonton. The Funeral Service and Reception will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Neerlandia Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Dave Tjart officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee or the Salvation Army.
