OAKES, Owen Lorne November 6, 1924 - October 31, 2009 It is with great sadness that the family of (Owen) Lorne Oakes announces his passing on October 31, 2009, 6 days before his 85th birthday. Lorne leaves his family and friends to treasure a lifetime of wonderful memories: his wife of 57 years, Estelle (nee Hamilton), his son Jim of Canmore Alberta, his daughter Laurie (George) Luchkow of Edmonton Alberta, his grandchildren Mikayla and Kieran Luchkow, his nephews George and Ross, his niece Cathy and his tennis, golf and dog walking friends. Lorne was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec. He served in the Navy aboard the Royal Mount in WWII. He then attended the University of Toronto and earned an Engineering degree. Lorne worked for Bell Canada for 40 years. In June, 1952 he married Estelle and they lived in Montreal, Rosemere, and Ste. Foy, Quebec before spending 4 1/2 years in Saudi Arabia. Lorne (AKA Poppa) and Estelle moved to Edmonton in 1995 to be closer to their grandchildren. Lorne lived a very active life: he played competitive tennis and was a tennis instructor until May, 2009. He loved to fish, play golf, garden and meet up with his dog walking friends. Lorne was a patient, kind, focused and loving person. A Celebration of Lorne's Life will be held Saturday, November 7th, 2009 at 3:30 p.m. at the Rio Terrace Moravian Church, 15108 - 76 Avenue, Edmonton. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lornes name may be made to a charity of your choice. First Memorial Funeral Services - Harmony Chapel 780-433-7335 logo Published in the Edmonton Journal on 11/6/2009
