Marnie MARRIOTT

MARRIOTT, Marnie 1919 - 2000 Marnie's remarkable life came to a peaceful close November 3, 2009, at age 90. Dear sister-in-law of Lois Marriott of Burlington, very special Aunt to Mary-Frances Fox of Hamilton, Charles Marriott of Waterdown and Alison McAuley of Pickering, their spouses and to the three young McAuley children. Marnie rejoins her parents Lillian and Charles E. Marriott and brothers Charlie and Frank, already at rest. A proud granddaughter of the Helliwell clan of Todmorden, and of Ontario's first OPP chief Major Joseph Rogers, Marnie was born in West Flamborough, and attended Westdale Collegiate in Hamilton. She went off to University College, U of T, studying sciences and joining the Kappa Kappa Gamma organization as a lifelong member. Marnie worked at Taylor Statten Camps and the Bolton Fresh Air Camp, and as a researcher at Sick Children's Hospital and CIL before building a career in aviation medicine with the Defence Research Board in Ottawa. She won a prized posting to Washington in the 1970s and brought her 83 year old mother Lillian along to live there for several stimulating years. In retirement she cared beautifully for her mother and served as a docent at the National Gallery, then moved to Toronto in 1985, to enjoy the arts scene and family and friends in the GTA. Marnie was a political junkie, a fashionista, a golfer, and a Muskoka cottager who mixed a good martini. Her delightful sense of humour and genuine knack for friendship enriched her life and others', making pals near and far as she travelled the world and kept in touch. The family gratefully thanks all the staff of Belmont House, Marnie's home of the past four years. Private burial. Marnie's friends and colleagues are warmly welcome for reminiscences and refreshments at a Celebration of Marnie's Life to be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 9, at the VISITATION CENTRE IN MOUNT PLEASANT CEMETERY, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, (enter by turning East off of Mt. Pleasant Road, above Moore), Toronto (416-485-5572). In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations to the Sick Kids' Hospital Foundation are suggested.
