HOPKINS, Marion Elizabeth 1936 - 2004 Marion Elizabeth Hopkins, beloved wife of Roger Hopkins, passed away on December 28, 2004, in the Thistle room in Calgary's Agape Hospice. Her husband was at her side when she stopped breathing and passed away pe acefully in her sleep at 5:25 p.m. Three weeks earlier, they had celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary. Marion is survived by her loving husband Roger; daughter Karen; son-in-law Tom and granddaughter Natasha; son David; sister Dorothy and brothe r-in-law Howard Fraser; and sister-in-law Vera Crabbe. Marion was predeceased by her father Bill Crabbe in 1992 and her mother Kathleen in 1968. Her two brothers Bill and Dick were killed in a fatal crash of their Ultralight plane in Hull, Quebec in November 2000. Marion was born on June 6, 1936, to William (Bill) and Kathleen Crabbe at the Red Cross Hospital, Mindemoya, Ontario. The family moved to Deseronto, Ontario, in 1948 where Marion spent her teenage years. In 1954, Marion entered Kingsto n General Hospital, from which she received her Registered Nursing diploma in 1957. After a brief stint at Toronto's Sunnybrook Veterans Hospital, the lure of the West called her, and in 1959, she moved to Calgary to work at the Calgary General Hospi tal. She joined SO-ED at the Calgary YMCA, and on St. Patrick's Day of 1960, she met Roger Hopkins. After a short courtship, they were married in December of that year. She worked at the Bethany Care Centre and in 1965 also began working at the Holy Cross Hospital's cancer clinic. She later moved over to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre around 1979, where she worked until her retirement in 2001. Marion was involved with the AARN and particularly with the Staff Nurses' Professional Association. She wa s the President of the local Chapter and worked for many years to improve nurses' pay and working conditions. In 1969, Marion realized one of her dreams when she bought her cottage at Windermere, where she spent many happy summers with her family. In 1970, the family joined the Calgary Winter Club, where she figure skated, swam, and bowled. Many people helped make Marion comfortable during her last year: Cindy Johnson, her primary caregiver; Jane Rivest of the ALS society; her close friends Sydn ey Hayes, Carolyn Kelly, Joan Erickson, Tilly Schock, Helen Law, and Lois Russell; and many other friends and caregivers. A Celebration of Marion's Life will be held at Foster's Garden Chapel, 3220-4 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta on Monday, January 3 , 2005 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made directly to the ALS Society of Alberta, #400, 320-23 Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB, T2S 0J2.
