Donald William REED

REED, Donald William - Passed away suddenly at his home on November 11, 2009. Born in Penghsien, Sichuan, China on April 12, 1926 to Fred and Anne, Don spoke fondly of his early experiences with his siblings Dorothy, Newton, Elinor and Malcolm along with his West China School classmates. Don attended Victoria College at the University of Toronto, where he graduated with a degree in chemistry. He remained in contact with his friends from college, Texaco and Imperial Oil. Don was predeceased by his wives Shelagh and Lynda. Their children Carolyn, John, Alan and Patrick and their spouses Tim, Josée and Nadine and their close family friend Marg Ketcheson, will greatly miss their loving and caring father. Don especially enjoyed spending time at his family cottage in Dalrymple, singing campfire tunes, roasting marshmallows and playing spoons with his grandchildren Tylar, Graeme, Bradley, Cameron and Alyssa. Don was a dedicated volunteer and active member of a vast variety of community groups, including Kew Beach and Dalrymple United Churches, the Hymn Society and the NDP party. He exemplified a spirit of generosity and will be remembered for his sensitive and giving manner, particular to those who regularly attended the Beach Interfaith Outreach Lunch Program. He regularly contributed to the well being of others, donating funds and time to over sixty charitable organizations on a regular basis. Don was a voracious reader and critical thinker and had an eclectic taste in music, maintaining an extensive collection of hymnaries. Dearly loved by his many nieces and nephews, Don will be sorely missed by all his friends and relatives. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Beach United Church for the Outreach Lunch Program which he championed. To celebrate his life, family and friends may call at the SHERRIN FUNERAL HOME at 873 Kingston Rd., (west of Victoria Park Ave.) on Monday, November 16th from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. Complete Funeral Services will be held at Beach United Church, 140 Wineva Ave., at Queen Street E., on Tuesday November 17th at 2 p.m. with visiting one hour prior to service.
