Catherine Ellen Gilligan, 92 Catherine Ellen Gilligan, 92, died peacefully Tuesday, March 16, 2004 at Sherwood Park Manor where she had been a resident for the past six years. She was born Nov. 22, 1911 in Cardinal, the daughter of Richard Lyman and the former Isobel Emburg. She was predeceased by her husband Garnet in 1988, a brother John in 1932 and a sister Isobel in 1982. For more than 60 years Mrs. Gilligan was a resident of Cardinal, where she attended Cardinal Public School and Cardinal Continuation School. She enjoyed her many years in Cardinal, where she and her husband owned and operated a small candy and convenience store on Dundas Street. The small store was located in the same building as the local theatre and was a favourite stopping-off place for the local children in the 1950s. The penny candy was a popular drawing card for the children with a few pennies to spend on candy to take to the movie next door. She had many stories to tell about the small customers who used to frequent the store. It was a favourite topic of conversation when she was remembering the good times in Cardinal. Some of the young people still remember her fondly to this day. After the store was sold she began working at the Cardinal post office, where she was employed for more than 14 years. She also enjoyed her time there, and had many fond memories and stories of her co-workers over these years. In 1974 after her husband retired, they moved to Brockville, where they enjoyed many years of retirement. Mrs. Gilligan was a loving wife and mother. She was a devout Roman Catholic and a member of the Catholic Women's League for many years. She is survived by her son Richard and his wife Jan of Brockville; grandchildren Patrick (Kim) of Spencerville, Tim (Anita) of Cardinal and Jane McDonald of Smiths Falls; and step-grandchildren Terri (Steven) Dougall of Pickering, Tom Anderson of Kingston and several great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gilligan is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She had a very close relationship with her sister Isobel and her children, John (deceased), Norman, Robert, Willard and Fred Gaylord and their families. Family and friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel in Brockville Thursday, March 18, 2004. Following the visitation, a mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church in Brockville, with Father Brian Price officiating. Interment took place at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Cardinal. Pallbearers were Patrick Gilligan, Tim Gilligan, Norman Gaylord, Robert Gaylord, Willard Gaylord and Tom Anderson. Memorial donations to Sherwood Park Manor and the Canadian Cancer Society will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
