Mary Harmaty, 79 Mary Elizabeth Harmaty, of Prescott, died June 17, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital. She was 79. Mary was born April 16, 1925 to parents John McCarney and Bernadette McEllen. She married her first husband, John McAuley, on Aug. 17, 1960. She and her second husband, John Harmaty, were married on July 2, 1985. She worked at the former Superior Silk Mills (Prescott Finishing) as office manager. She then worked as office manager at the former Prescott Public Utilities Commission until her retirement. An active member of St. Mark's Catholic Church, she was presented with her 60th anniversary pin by the Catholic Women's League the evening prior to her death. She served for many years as treasurer on the St. Mark's Cemetery board. In addition to the church, her retirement years were spent centered around her immediate family and her extended McAuley, Harmaty and Hargraves families. She was affectionately known by all the children in her large family as the "baker of the ultimate chocolate chip cookie." She is survived by her stepchildren Stella McCoy (Frank), Thomas McAuley (Glenda), John McAuley (Carol), Luke McAuley (Miriam), Patricia Tristram (Jim), Robert Harmaty (Ruth), Lynda Tetrault (Jean-Paul), Deborah Souder (Shawn) and James Hargraves (Rosemary), her sisters Margaret McFarlane and Bernadette McParlan (Ed) and by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, husbands, brothers Bert, Joe and Eddie McCarney, sister Catherine McCarney and brother-in-law Charlie McFarlane. Visitation was on Sunday, June 20 and Monday, June 21 at Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott. Mass of Christian Burial took place Tuesday, June 22 at 11 am at St. Mark's Catholic Church. Father J. Appelman officiated. A committal service followed at St. Mark's Cemetery. Pallbearers were Michael McCoy, Paul and Jason McAuley, Nicholas Souder, Wes McFarlane and Bob Dixon. The funeral service included readings by Jennifer Tristram and Jenny McFarlane. Serving on the altar were Charleigh, Hallie and Jamie McFarlane. An honour guard by the Catholic Women's League was also present; beautiful music was provided by the St. Mark's funeral choir. Memorial donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
