Jean Maude COURTNEY

Jean Maude Hamilton (1918 - 2004) Jean Maude Hamilton peacefully and unexpectedly passed away at her home in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on September 28, 2004. Jean was born in Quebec City on June 15, 1918 to Florence Courtney (formerly Mathe ws) and husband Daniel McIntyre Courtney. She was the second eldest and last remaining of five siblings Sylvia, Earl, Lionel and Ruth. Jean grew up during the Depression. She was an outstanding student who won many awards, including a fully paid high school scholarship. After high school, she had aspirations of becoming a teacher; however, difficult financial times precluded her being able to leave home to do so. Instead she attended the local Bart Business School in Quebec City where she learne d secretarial and administrative skills that helped to sustain her immediate and later her own family for many years. In her late teens, Jean met Godfrey Hamilton, whose father worked at the Jeffrey Hale Hospital in Quebec City. Jean and Godfrey marr ied and moved to Toronto in 1949 where they lived until the early 1970's. There, they raised three children Robert, the eldest, David and Kevin, the youngest. During the later stages of raising her family, Jean returned to work. She held administrati ve positions with the Scarborough Secondary School Board and later as executive assistant for the Minister of Finance for the province of Prince Edward Island, Mr. Bennett Campbell. Jean was a remarkable, intelligent, caring and independent woman who always put her family and children first. Her dream was to see all of her children complete college, and they all did, each obtaining at least two degrees. Today, Robert is an Executive with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in Ottawa, after re tiring as a Commodore from the Canadian Navy, David is a senior partner with a national Toronto-based law firm, and Kevin is a professor in Vancouver. Clearly Jean's dreams became a reality. Though Jean never formally became a teacher, she taught all who she knew by example the true values in life. She became a great friend to many whose lives she touched and she will be greatly missed. Thanks Jean, rest in peace and may God bless your soul. Special thanks go the residents and management of #2 H arbourside Charlottetown, for being such wonderful neighbours to Jean, to all those who were able to attend her memorial service on such short notice, to the Reverend John W.G. Clarke of St. Paul's Anglican Church, and to the Hennessey Funeral Home f or their support during difficult times.
