VARNEY, "Cy" Cyril In loving memory of Cyril "Cy" Varney, 91 years long time West End resident, who passed away Saturday evening, February 7th, 2004 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - St. Joseph's Health Centre. He was born in Surrey, England and married Dorothy (Cornthwaite) in Sudbury in 1938 at the Church of the Epiphany. As a teenager he joined the British Merchant Marine until age 17 when he immigrated to Canada. Cy came to Sudbury in 1929. He worked at INCO for 41 years retiring in 1972 as the administrator of the Copper Cliff Hospital. He then worked at the Lougheed Funeral Home for 20 years. A proud Canadian he served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II having been decorated for distinguished service. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br #76 Sudbury and the Royal Canadian Naval Association. He was a member of the Sudbury Lodge AF & AM #658. A well respected leader in education he was the past chair of the Sudbury Board of Education and past trustee with the Ontario Public School Association. In recognition of his hard work and commitment to our community Cyril Varney Public School was named in his honour. A man of great faith, he was a devoted member of the Church of the Resurrection where he actively participated in the church's ministries and fellowship. He was a long time serving lay steward for the Anglican Diocese of Algoma. Cy's wit and wisdom were appreciated by his many friends. He embodied the lessons taught by Jesus as a caring shepherd and sharing good samaritan. His light let others better see the face of God in our community and now he is reunited with his dear wife Dorothy hearing the Lord's words "Well done good and faithful servant enter, yours is the kingdom of heaven". Beloved husband of Dorothy (Cornthwaite) Varney predeceased 2003. Loving father of Wm. John Varney (wife Dianne) of Sudbury. Cherished grandfather of Tamara Varney of Winnipeg, Brenda Brownlee (Scott) of Bancroft, Tanya Varney (fiancé David Landry) of Bracebridge and Paula Varney of Sudbury; great grandchildren Jordan and Beth. Dear son of John and Elizabeth (Reeves) Varney predeceased. Dear brother of Dorothy Atkinson, Nora Coverdale, Grace Harkness, John Varney, Andrew Varney and Beryl O'Neill all predeceased. Sadly missed by many nieces and nephews. Resting at the LOUGHEED FUNERAL HOME, 252 Regent St., at Hazel St. Funeral Service in the Church of the Resurrection, 363 Regent St., Sudbury, Wednesday, February 11th, 2004 at 11 am. Interment in the Sudbury Anglican Cemetery. A memorial service will be held 7:30 pm Tuesday under the auspices of the Royal Canadian Legion Br #76 Sudbury.
