ARLIE GIBSON (FERRIS) Our beloved mother, Arlie Gibson (Ferris), 80, of Atikokan, Ont., went home to be with her Lord Jesus, whom she loved and served, on Friday, Aug. 5, 2000 at her cabin on Big Pine Lake. Mom was born Nov. 10, 1919 in Coderre, Sask. to Ralph and Henrietta Showalter. The family moved to Morson, Ont., in 1922, and then to a farm in the Finland, Ont. area in 1930. During this time, Grandma and Grandpa Showalter also were caretakers for Shady Rest Lodge on Crow Lake. On July 27, 1939, Mom married Albert Ferris, and they resided in Finland, where they farmed and raised their children. Mom worked at various tourist resorts over the years, spending about 25 years at Helliar’s Resort at Nestor Falls before retiring. Mom and Dad travelled frequently to visit family and friends, and spent countless days fishing and enjoying time with their children and grandchildren. Mom was known as the best fishing guide on Crow Lake, and for her shrieks when she hooked a fish. Mom also was a long-time member of Off Lake Covenant Church and served as Sunday School teacher, deaconess, member of the Covenant Women’s Board, and also led home Bible studies. During Dad’s illness, she faithfully watched and cared for him until his passing in June, 1991. On March 2, 1996, Mom married Jim Gibson and moved to Atikokan, where she enjoyed town conveniences for the first time. Together, they attended the Full Gospel Assembly in Atikokan and ministered to the residents of the extended care unit of the hospital and regularly visited many shut-ins. They also spent much time at the cabin and houseboat on Turtle Lake, where Mom continued to enjoy her fishing. Mom leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Jim Gibson; children, Mary Jane (Tom) Graham of Prince Albert Sask., “Sonny” Albert (Margaret) Ferris Jr. of Finland, Ont., Ruth Ann (Allan) Savage of Beausejour, Man., and Linda Louise (Jim) Anderson of Moosehorn, Man.; foster son, Dennis (Anitta) Hyatt of Dryden, Ont., step-children, Lynn (Ed) Enge, Tracy Gibson, Dale (Lisa) Gibson, Harleen (Lorne) Haugen, Dawn (Victor) Marsen, and Randy (Roberta) Kehl; 14 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her brother, Manley (Jo) Showalter of Kelowna, B.C., sister, Hazel Pietila of Pemberton, B.C.; sister-in-law, Grace Showalter of Nestor Falls, Ont., special uncle, Vernon (Judy) Mergel of Wood Mountain, Sask.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Ferris Sr.; infant daughter, Jean Elizabeth; brothers, Ralph Showalter, Leonard (Elma) Showalter, and Clarence (Helen) Showalter; and brother-in-law, Bill Pietila. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Aug 9, 2000 from 7-9 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, Ont. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug 10, 2000 at 2 p.m. at the Christian Reform Church in Emo, Ont., with Rev. Michael Mantyla officiating, Interment will follow at the Finland Cemetery.
