STUBBS, John Cooke. Died after a brief illness at the Saint John Reginal Hospital on March 3, 2000. Husband of the late Caroline Hall. Born in Montreal, he was the son of the late Harold John and Sarah Gertrude (Cooke) Stubbs. John attended Stanstead College in Quebec and graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering in 1947. He was a member of PHI KAPPA PI Fraternity and the McGill badminton team. Between 1947-1950 he was Chief Engineer at Bathurst Pulp and Paper then Plan Engineer for Robert Gair Co., Montreal, between 1950-1966. Between 1966-1979, John was Plant Engineer for the Irving Pulp Mill, Saint John and then became Chief Engineer for Custom Fabricators and Machinists in Saint John until his retirement in 1984. John was a member of the Corporation of Professional Engineers of Quebec (now the OIQ), the Engineering Institute of Canada and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geophysicists of New Brunswick. He was an active participant in the Paper Board Group, Technical Section, of the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association. John was an avid golfer and a long time member of the Westfield Golf and Country Club, the Royal United Services Institute and the Eclectic Reading Club. He enjoyed playing bridge and was renowned as a skilled craftsman. John is survived by sisters Evelyn Malcolm of Montreal and Elizabeth West of Vermont, and by nieces and nephews Leona Paul, Vera Lawyer, Harold West, David Malcolm, Heather Malcolm Dailey, Brenda Hall, Charleen Coirazza and Wendal Bessant. The funeral service was held at A.W. Cavanagh Funeral Home, 91 Leinster Street, on Tuesday, March 7, 2000 at 3:30 p.m. Cremation took place at Fernhill Crematorium. Interment in Quebec at a later date. Donations to the Saint John Regional Hospital, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and the N.B. Lung Association or a charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family.
