Honourable, LL.D. At the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on December 31, 2000, Honourable Charles Robert McElman, born in Fredericton, N.B. Husband of the late Jessie Faye McElman (Douglass) of Stanley, and son of the late Frank and Amanda (Dunphy) of Fredericton. Predeceased by brothers George and Hanford McElman, and sister Annie Paulini. Served R.C.A.F. 1941-46, Secretary N.B. Liquor Control Board 1946-51, Private Secretary to Premier John B. McNair, Q.C. 1951-52, Executive Secretary N.B. Liberal Association 1954-1960, Executive Assistant to the Premier of New Brunswick 1960-66, Summoned to the Senate of Canada (Nashwaak valley) 1966 and served until retirement in 1990. One of the finest fly fishermen to come from South Devon. Survived by sons James D. McElman and wife Sharon, Frederick C. McElman and wife Elizabeth Sloat of Fredericton; daughters Barbara J. Jardine and husband Jock of Ottawa and Mary F. Smith and husband Donald of Wells, N.B.; Brother James O. McElman and wife Kay of Ottawa, sister-in-law Glenna Douglass of Ottawa, and brother-in-law Fred Hurley of Stanley; grandchildren, David Jardine (Peri Lynn Turnbull) of San Diego, Susan (David) Thomas of Ottawa, Sara and Jennie McElman, Amanda (Richard) Starr, Joshua (Heather) McElman all of Fredericton, Victoria and Samantha Smith of Wells, N.B. Chosen granddaughter Leanne Fitch; great grandchildren Liam and Daniel Starr, and Jessica and Sara Thomas; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. No visitation by request of the deceased and family. Memorial service at Christ Church Parish Church, 245 Westmorland Street, Fredericton, on Wednesday, January 3, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Barry Craig officiating assisted by Canon T.A. Smith, Ven. John Sharpe, and Most Rev. H.L. Nutter. Reception following in church hall. Interment at a later date at St. Thomas Anglican Cemetery in Stanley, N.B. No flowers by request, donations if desired may be made to St. Mary's Anglican Church or a charity of the donor's choice.
