Died peacefully, aged 83, at the Elisabeth Bruyere Centre, on Tuesday January 10th, after a long illness valiantly borne. Sixth child of the late Basil Brooke Carter and Molly (nee Casey). Dearly loved husband and best friend for 52 years of Pamela (nee Price) of London, England. Beloved father of Vivien Young (Michael) and Valerie Carter (Bill Sharkey). Dear grandfather of Stephen, Philip and Kenneth Young and Meghan Sharkey. Harry attended Lakefield School and Upper Canada College, and graduated with a B.A. and M.A. (Pol Sci. and Econ.) from Trinity College, Toronto University. He joined the Royal Canadian Artillery in 1940 as a 2nd Lt. with the First Field Regiment. He served in Normandy with the 3rd Medium Regiment of the 87th Battery at the height of the Caen-Falaise battle in 1944. In October 1944, he was recalled to Ottawa from the army, with the rank of Captain, to join External Affairs. He served in Washington, New York (United Nations), The Hague, New Delhi, Finland and South Africa; the latter two countries as Ambassador. Harry had a keen and inquiring mind and a thirst for knowledge to the end. He will be terribly missed by his wife and family. Funeral Service at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod St. at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 13th. No flowers please. If so wished donations to the Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation, or the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated. Ottawa Citizen, January 11, 2001
