DSC, CD Commander RCN (Ret'd) Born in Pontypridd, South Wales, August 1, 1920. Died February 17, 2001 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria B.C. Mourned by his beloved wife Vivien and children Phil (Louise), Jill (Stephen) Rakowski and Robert (Donna) and the grandchildren he adored, Alex, Alison, Andrea, Christopher, Evan, Erica, Matthew and Sarah. Sorely missed by his sister Jeanne (Perons), of Purton Stoke, Wiltshire. Volunteered with the Royal Navy at the beginning of WWII, serving on the destroyer HMS Hesperus and the battleship HMS Duke of York. Awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and Mentioned in Dispatches for service in the Far East in HM Submarine Thorough. Following a happy transfer to the Royal Canadian Navy during the Korean War in 1952, he specialized in Anti-Submarine Warfare. He commanded the frigate HMCS Lauzon and the destroyer HMCS Gatineau and served on the Directing Staff at the Canadian Forces Staff College in Toronto. Leaving the Navy in 1972 he served with the NATO Naval section in Brussels, before retiring in August 1985. Settling in Victoria, he was particularly active on the Executive of the Naval Officers Association of Vancouver Island and an enthusiastic member of the Victoria Golf Club. He was an officer and gentleman, driven by honour, devotion and love of his wife, his family and country. His warmth, his humour and his genuine sense of interest in everyone he met will be deeply missed. Currently resting at the First Memorial Chapel, 1155 Fort St. Visitation Friday, February 23 from 2 to 5 p.m. Funeral service 11 a.m. Saturday, February 24 at St. George's Anglican Church, Cadboro Bay.
