(Grant) Mavis, in her 98th year, is now in her heaven, "at the cottage" forever, in love and peace. We wish her well in her new world. Love from her three daughters, Alison, Judy and Nancy. Mavis was born June 21, 1903 in New Edinburgh, Ottawa, one of the large family of Margaret Beardwood and John Clyde (J.C.) Grant. She attended Model School and Lisgar Collegiate where she excelled in both academics and athletics. Business college led to her early career with "Mother Metropolitan". In 1930 Mavis married Edward S. (Ted) Reid, whom she had known since childhood and who also paddled, as did she, for "the Burghs". Mavis and Ted lived in Ottawa South and the Glebe before moving to Montreal West in 1955. A born teacher by nature, she taught all the children to swim at her beloved island cottage at Lac des Iles, and many others at the Chateau Laurier pool. She also taught English to the children of the Russian Embassy for several years. The move to Montreal introduced them to curling which they enjoyed with a passion for years. Retirement brought Mavis and Ted back to Ottawa to enjoy years of curling and swimming. After Ted's death in 1979, she later lived with Nancy and Keith before moving to the Perley in recent years. Mavis died peacefully on Wednesday, April 18, 2001 at the Perley and Rideau Veterans Health Centre after wonderful visits with family and friends and excellent tender, loving care by the staff of the Perley, especially in these last difficult weeks. Mavis is survived by her children Alison and Larry Reid, Judy Dunlop and Doug Emmons, and Nancy and Keith McGruer. She was predeceased by brothers Nairn, Clyde (Edith), and Ainslie Grant and by her sister Lois McDonald (Stroud). She is survived by sisters Winsome Foran (late Jack) and Gwenyth Fenton (late Graham), her brother Ronald Grant (Lee) and by sister-in-law Mildred Grant (late Ainslie). She will be greatly missed by her 12 grandchildren and their families; Caroline Hawthorne (Don Laflamme), Jennifer Reid (Ken Petersen), Jane Dunlop (Denis Trudeau), Bruce Dunlop (Danielle Amelotte), Margo Staniforth (Kevin), Jill Dunlop (Mark Bourbonnais), Cheryl Harrel (Joe), David McGruer (Carole), Rob McGruer (Shannon), Kathy Hall (Rob), Reid McGruer (Izumi Miki), Joanne Ethier and the 22 great-grandchildren who brought her so much pleasure. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Friday, April 20, 2001. and on Saturday after 12 noon until the service in the Chapel at 1 p.m. Mavis's wish that she be cremated will be respected and her ashes will be interred with Ted at Pinecrest Cemetery. the family prefers that friends make a donation to the Champions for Children Foundation - Campership Program (1602 Telesat Court, Ottawa,) and help send a child to camp.
