Alastair Taylor MATHESON

Died peacefully in Victoria on May 18, 2001. Al was born in Vancouver in 1929. He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 41 years Lawrie, his beloved daughters and their husbands Sally and Frank Balazas, Ellen and Charles Kierulf and his adored grandchildren Nicholas and Emma Balazas and Alastair and Gavin Kierulf. He also leaves his brothers Bill (Shirley) of Vancouver and Don (Mary) of Vernon, close friends Sally and Alex McAuley, and Marga and Ernst Von Rudloff, as well as many cousins, friends and colleagues throughout Canada. Al was respected internationally as a biochemist, his work being done at the National Research Council in Ottawa and the University of Victoria, where he was Dean of Science for a number of years. In 1984 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. For the past 20 years he has served as an Elder in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Victoria. On retirement he discovered the Oak Bay Lawn Bowling Club where he made many wonderful friends. He was loved and respected by everyone who knew him and will be greatly missed. Many thanks from the family to Dr. McNaughton, the doctors and nurses at the Cancer Clinic, the Palliative Care unit and the nursing staff on Area C Jubilee Hospital. Flowers are gratefully declined.
