At her residence, Monday, June 25, 2001. Marie Joan Prot, age 78. Beloved wife of Bernard (Bunny) Michael McCann. Dear mother of Roddy (Janet Larocque), Donna (Rockburn), Charlene (Claude Houle), Michael (Gabrielle Dumoulin), Terry, Pat, Howie (Janet Demers), Debbie, Valerie (Lachance), Peggy (Terry Bartley), Maureen (Bill Russell), Tim (Ginette Ouellette), Christine, Joanne (Pat Robillard), Buddy and Vince (Suzanne Gratton). Lovingly remembered by 26 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Dear sister of Beverley Lamb, Bernice Chapman, Lorraine Farrall-Sabourin (Rene), Claire Monaghan (Fred), Allan Prot (Betty), Brian Prot (Donna) and predeceased by a brother Donald and sisters Maureen and Diane. Sister-in-law to Lorraine and Mart Cullen, Marie and John Stanton and Carol MacDonald. The family are grateful to Dr. Gilbert Verville for his special care and devotion. Mrs. McCann received the following awards: 1969-70 Appreciation Award, Vanier Minor Softball Association, 1979 Nominated for Woman of the Year, 1985 Named Mother of the Year by Vanier Optimist Club, 1986 & 1987 Volunteer Award City of Vanier, 1998 City of Vanier Outstanding Citizen Award and 2000 CJOH Mother of the Year. A founding member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Mrs. McCann was the recipient of the following Royal Canadian Legion Awards: 1971 Certificate of Appreciation to the McCann Family, 1979 Life Membership, Ladies' Auxiliary, 1979 Bob Osborn Award for Female Legionnaire of The Year, 1986 Certificate of Merit, Ladies Auxiliary, 1987 Legion Meritorious Service Award, 1988 Outstanding Service Award. A member of the Catholic Women's League for 40 years, Mrs. McCann served the parent Advisory Board of Assumption School. Her volunteer work included the following: extensive service to the Royal Canadian Legion, Eastview Branch, City of Vanier Volunteer's Association Committee, Coach and Secretary, Vanier Minor Softball Association, Committee for the Canadian Cancer Society, Vanier Branch, Ottawa District Association of the Physically and Mentally Handicapped, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Muscular Dystrophy Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Royal Ottawa Hospital, Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Red Shield Appeal, The Red Cross, The Poppy Campaign, The March of Dimes, The Kidney Foundation, The Heart Fund, The Good Companions Senior's Centre, Senior's Homes, Rideau Veteran's Home and the Orleans Civitan Club. Friends may pay respects at the Kelly Funeral Home, 585 Somerset Street (centretown) Wednesday from 2 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from noon to 9 p.m. Funeral Friday to Assumption Church, 320 Olmstead Street, Vanier for Mass of Christian Funeral at 11:00 a.m. Interment Notre Dame Cemetery.
