1904-2001 With dignity, Eva Lucas Fisher, at the age of 97, died on Sunday, July 8th, 2001 at Grove Park Home in Barrie, dear wife of the late W. Allen Fisher (d. 1989). Predeceased by sister Vera Forsyth and brother Leonard Lucas, survived by brother Alec Lucas. The Lucas family, Bert and Emma, with children Eva, Leonard, and Vera, left Kent, England in 1913 to settle within a year as farmers on Dungannon Farm, a grand estate owned by the Oliver family, one of a group of American families who built stately summer residences early in the century near Cobourg to be close to the cooling breezes of Lake Ontario. Eva and her family (which soon included younger brother Alec) loved the hills and woods of Northumberland County where they developed a special interest in the bird and animal life surrounding them. They had no car in those years and few luxuries but they grew up in a home that valued education and books. Grandma Lucas read Susanna Moodie to her children. A few years after Eva's marriage to Allen Fisher of Cobourg they moved to Barrie in 1937 when Allen became head of history and music at Barrie Central Collegiate. For the next five decades she and Allen touched and enriched the lives of many people who grew up and were educated in this city. Eva will be remembered with love by her children, Joan (Dick Meyer), and Mark (Josey Fisher) of Barrie, Sylvia (Tom Middlebro') of Ottawa, and her beloved grandchildren, Tanya, Alison and Allen Middlebro' and Matthew and Emma Fisher. Eva will be remembered with great affection by her neighbours of 50 years on Sunnidale Road, by her many friends at Trinity Anglican Church and in the Brereton Field Naturalists' Club, but especially by the former members of the Barrie Collegiate Band (1937-1972) who knew her as the "the band mother" and as a kind and gentle lady. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Anglican Church, 24 Collier Street, Barrie at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 12th. Reception to follow in the parish hall.
