(Thomas Edward) Born in England February 21, 1921, died peacefully in Brockville, Ontario on Sunday September 2, 2001, with his three daughters at his side. Ted was a WW II veteran with the Royal Air Force. His Canadian career spanned the Royal Canadian Air Force, CEPE (Central Experimental & Proving Establishment, Dept. of Defense) and the Ministry of Transport. Over the years, Ted worked on many challenging projects for both the Canadian and US governments. His specialty was radar and communications. One project he particularly enjoyed was the six months he spent in California as the Official Canadian Government Observer during F5 Fighter jet trials, working alongside the same team who supported the Apollo space missions. Ted also played an integral role in the installation of the radar systems on the CN tower. Never one to be satisfied with the obvious, Ted thrived on finding solutions to impossible problems. During Ted's retirement in California, he continued to travel, with trips to Europe, the Far East, and South America. He spent two years rebuilding a B36 bomber at the Castle Air Museum in Merced, California and this remarkable contribution was widely acknowledged. Ted's daughters and friends will always remember his British sense of humour and dry wit. Lovingly remembered by his 3 daughters and sons-in-law, Louise Maxfield (Thunder Bay ON); Jane Futcher (Bernard) and James Bernard (Delta ON); Hilary and Stephen Hutchinson (Oakville ON); his sister Irene Futcher (St. Petersburg FL); his former wife, Veronica Retallack (Perth ON); his grandchildren Jennifer (and husband Chad), Kyla (and husband Art), Isaac, and Haleigh; and great-grandchildren Damien and (expected) Brianna. He is also missed by friends in California, Marge Wells, Cristianne and Chenay Quiros, and Nancy Risely. Donations to your local Air Force Museum. YOUR PLANE WAS WAITING DAD; HAVE A WONDERFUL JOURNEY. WE LOVE YOU! The Ottawa Citizen, September 8, 2001
