Predeceased by one sister, Celia (Woodburn) Abra, and four brothers: Emerson, Harry, James (Distinguished Flying Medal, RCAF) and Ralph. Jean was especially close to her large extended family, particularly her nephews and nieces. Jean slipped away peacefully in Toronto at Christie Gardens on 8 September, 2001. She was born in Ottawa on 6 December, 1907. Jean was a "woman of substance", who served throughout the Thirties at Ottawa Civic Hospital and then St. Paul's Women's Missionary Hospital in the frontier town of Hearst, Ontario. Married in 1940, Jean accompanied her husband Homer to Nobel, Dundalk and Kirkton pastorates in Ontario for ten years, then to Germany and Ottawa during his twenty years with the RCAF, and finally to Toronto for his ten years at United Church Headquarters. Throughout her long life, both before and during her marriage, she was a dedicated and tireless volunteer for her church and her community. The family expresses its particular gratitude for the extraordinary care and love that Jean received over two years at Christie Gardens. The staff's dedication and selflessness are exceptional.
