On Monday, September 17, 2001 at age 89, Bernard (Bernie) Hughes, one of Canada's original "homeboys" from Coventry, England, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving friend and companion of 25 years, Helen Holgate, at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. He will be sadly missed by his children, David and Denise Hughes; Elsie-Jean and Don Robert; and Helen and Denis Lamothe. His memory will be cherished by his many grandchildren; Linda and Bob Martel; Diane Hammond; Michael and Teresa Hughes; Alan Hughes and Lisa Moore; Robert Lamothe; Brenda Chevrier and Tim Schrader; Stephen and Sandra Robert; Lee Anne and Rob Blum; and James and Karen Lamothe. His legacy will live on in his great-grandchildren: Brent, Lisa and Derek Martel; David and Christine Hammond; Nicole and Jeffrey Hughes; Travis and Philip Hughes; Skylar Moore and Mitchel Hughes-Moore; Michelle and Zackery Lamothe; Madison and Chelsea Robert. He came from humble beginnings and left behind a world made richer by his love, his humour and his deep caring for this family. Friends may call at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road (between Bayshore Dr. and Baseline Rd.), Nepean, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Service to celebrate Bernie's life will be held in the chapel on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Donations to the Queensway Carleton Hospital in appreciation for their loving care.
