(Air Vice Marshall, R.C.A.F. Ret., O.B.E., C.D.) Died peacefully at his home in Guelph on October 18, 2001 at the age of 89. Born and raised in Kitchener-Waterloo, he was the last member of his immediate family that included sister Frances Breithaupt and brothers Walter and Aubrey Bean. He leaves his dear wife Lorain (Baker), their children Peter (and wife Anthea) of Ottawa, Audrey (and husband John Knowles) of Montreal, Frances (and husband Bill Preston) of Churubusco, New York, and grandsons David and Jeffery, sons of Peter Bean. Wilfrid Bean graduated with a B.A. in Political Science and Economics from the University of Western Ontario in 1934. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939, serving in the Second World War as a torpedo bomber pilot and ultimately as commander of the 415 "Swordfish" Squadron. He held a variety of senior positions with the Canadian Forces during the post war period, retiring in 1967 following his final posting as Chief of Staff of the 4th Allied Tactical Air Force in Ramstein, Germany. In 1970, he joined the administrative staff of the University of Guelph, and served as Vice President Administration until 1976, when he retired permanently. The family extends special thanks to Dr. Blair Fraser, the staff of Robertson Brown Health Services, and the many others who made home care possible. Funeral services will be held at St. George's Anglican Church, 99 Woolwich Street, Guelph on Monday, October 22, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. with Archdeacon Thomas M. Greene officiating.
