Dr. died Thursday, November 22, 2001, at the age of 92. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret, of Surrey, B.C.; his daughter, Ruth Annis and husband Andy Wachtel, Twila and Robin of Coquitlam, B.C.; his son Bob Annis and wife Mary, Jennifer and Fiona of Brandon, Manitoba; his daughter, Mary McPhee and husband Doug and Colin of Duncan, B.C.; and his sister, Evelyn Annis of Peterborough, Ontario. Dad grew up on a farm near Pickering, Ontario, his family roots going back to the early settlers. He rode a horse to a one-room schoolhouse ten miles away, and went on to earn a B.A. and M.A. from University of Toronto, and a Ph.D. in Economics from Cornell University. He was a Fellow at the Brookings Institute. In 1937, he joined the Federal Department of Finance in Ottawa, which he served until his retirement in 1975, many of those years as Director of Tariffs and Trade. He chaired several national boards. Involved in international trade negotiations, he had appointments to Washington, D.C. in the 1950s, and Geneva, Switzerland in the 1960s. Dad was modest and soft-spoken. He instilled in his children a strong sense of moral and social responsibility. He was devoted to his family, his community, and his country. His was a life well lived.
